3 Reasons A Basement Crack Is A Big Problem

Posted on

If you spot a crack in your basement foundation, you may be tempted to leave it alone. It is easy to assume that a crack running between blocks in a concrete wall or a slim crack in a solid slab is not a big deal. However, any basement crack—no matter how small or seemingly non-threatening—should be evaluated by a professional. These flaws in your home's primary foundation can lead to a long list of problems if they are not addressed in a timely fashion. Check out a few reasons a basement crack should always be treated as a big problem.

A Crack Can Signify That the Structural Integrity Has Been Compromised

When you have a basement, the walls of the basement are the primary support system for the rest of the house. Therefore, a crack in one of the basement walls can truly be an issue. Certain types of cracks can mean the structural integrity of the entire house is at risk. Even if the crack appears small or narrow, it is best to have it evaluated by a professional to ensure there is not a deeper issue at play than simply compromised concrete or deteriorating cement.

One Crack Can Allow in a Great Deal of Moisture

A moist basement is a breeding ground for mold spores. The area does not usually get a lot of natural sunlight, which means moisture particles can hang around long enough for mold spores to form. If you only have one crack, you may suspect it will not allow in enough moisture to cause a problem. However, one small crack can allow a lot of water to seep inside and cause problems. Water naturally takes the path of least resistance. So, if you have a crack and the ground becomes saturated with rain, the crack can become a natural entry point for a substantial amount of water.

Cracks Can Mean Easy Access to a Range of Pests

The basement walls are not like a standard foundation. These walls are foundational and act as support but they are also your actual basement walls that should protect the interior of the house. One common culprit behind insect or even rodent problems is access points for those pests to make their way into the house. Something as seemingly simple as a small crack in your basement wall could provide easy access to pests that pose a threat to your home and family.
